Pork tacos and chicken enchiladas may be on many travellers’ culinary wishlists when they come to Mexico, but it’s not all meat all the time. In fact, in Tijuana, vegetarians and vegans will be greeted with a variety of restaurants and cafés serving up meat-free alternatives, thanks to Baja’s always-surprising California culinary scene. From fancy restaurants to street food carts, the veggie options in Tijuana are a-ma-zing — vegetarian or not, you have to visit these places when you’re in town.
Ceviche is a big part of the culinary scene in Tijuana, but typically, vegetarians haven’t been able to enjoy these flavours — until La Veggichería came along and came up with the idea of making veggie ceviche. Hooray! La Veggichería offers delicious ceviche and cocktails “a la veggie.” Their mushroom ceviche is to die for and their coconut cocktail is exquisite. If mushrooms aren’t your thing, go for the cauliflower ceviche with a palmito (heart of palm) cocktail. It makes us so happy that people can experience what ceviche tastes like but with fish-free ingredients! They also serve enchiladas, enmoladas (enchiladas with mole sauce), vegan burgers, pozole (Mexican stew), you name it! Head to Brasil 8496, Colonia Cacho inside the Los Foodies de la Cacho food court to find this new local favourite.
Our recommendation: Palmito cocktail
This food stand offers a variety of vegetarian and vegan tacos, and it’s the originality and excellent seasoning in their stews that sets TacoNveggie apart from other stands. Head to Av Colima, Col. Madero (Cacho) and you’ll see their food cart waiting for you. Perfect for on-the-go meals.
Our recommendation: Huazontle taco with turnip stew
In addition to an extensive (and very successful) menu of cold-pressed juices, Alma Verde has delicious organic, vegan, and vegetarian meal options. It is not a 100% veggie restaurant, with options for all kind of palates, but they sure know how to cook veggie food. Freshly prepared and beautiful plates, plus a stimulating atmosphere await you here. It is definitely one of our favourite places. Head to Av. Brasil 8930 Col. Cacho and you’ll see this really pretty establishment.
Our recommendation: Green juice and beetroot ravioli
Come and free yourself of toxins as you eat healthy, delicious, meatless food — and fall in love with this exquisite place. Everything on offer at Veggie Smalls is homemade, even their ketchup and mayo. Head to Ave. Sanchez Taboada 10650, inside the Food Garden, a famous gastronomic market in Zona Río, and you’ll spot them waiting just for you.
Our recommendation: Portobello burger or chili dog
So here you have them: the best spots in town for vegetarians and vegans! Come visit Tijuana and get to taste these awesome veggie spots that locals love!
Home to the busiest border crossing in the world, Tijuana — whose name comes from an indigenous word meaning “place near the sea” — is way more than just a party city (although, yeah, there’s some of that, too). In the ‘20s and ‘30s, it became the place to let loose, a Prohibition-era hot spot just over the U.S. border. Today, it’s one of the most diverse cities in Mexico, with some pretty epic weather and even more epic tacos.
