  1. On December 31, 2013, Dubai broke the Guinness World Record for the biggest fireworks display. How big was it? More than 500,000 fireworks were set off; the previous record, set by Kuwait in 2012, featured some 77,000 fireworks.
  2. Don’t expect to see any stars while you’re in Hong Kong! All that densely populated neon makes the city’s sky 1,000 times brighter than international norms.
  3. To acknowledge American astronaut John Glenn’s mission orbiting the Earth in 1962, Perth residents turned on their lights in greeting as the spacecraft flew over Western Australia. Glenn commented that the city was visible from space, earning Perth an international nickname.
  4. You can join Lantern Festival celebrations all over Asia, but some of the biggest are in Hoi An, Vietnam; Chengdu, China; Taipei, Taiwan; Nagasaki, Japan; Seoul, Korea; and Chiang Mai, Thailand. We know we’ve missed some, so points to you even if you didn’t name one of these ones!
  5. The Swaminarayan Akshardham temple is located in Delhi, and is the third largest Hindu complex in the world, after Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Sri Ranganathaswamy in India.
