If you’re like us, Black Friday probably doesn’t tend to get you too excited. Battling crowds at the mall and fighting over laptops just isn’t our thing — and we know there are lots of you out there like us who just don’t get the buzz. Something we can get behind, however, is #GivingTuesday, a global day to give back.
Observed on the Tuesday following US Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday was established to create a focus on charitable giving and generosity. Consider it the antidote to Black Friday and Cyber Monday mayhem — a way to kick off the holiday season by being kinder and more generous, and celebrating philanthropy instead of consumerism. Since it launched in 2011, the campaign has spread around the world, using social media to encourage giving back to local communities.
So, needless to say, it’s pretty much our favourite day of the year. And for that reason, we’ve got a few unique #GivingTuesday gift ideas for your fellow responsible traveller, that go beyond gadgets and gear. Best of all, you can spare the headaches and skip the shopping queues while giving something that means something.
Among this year’s Global Gifts from the Intrepid Foundation are warm clothing, blankets, and heaters for Syrian refugees reestablishing their lives in Turkey; school access for disabled children in India; and breakfasts for malnourished children in Peru. These gifts provide vital support to people in need around the world, plus, the Intrepid Foundation matches each donation dollar for dollar, so twice as many people will benefit from your generosity. The gifts range in cost from $15 to $600 (all prices are in Australian dollars). On purchase, you’ll receive a PDF that you can email or present to your friend or loved one.
For those that are looking to give the gift of a travel experience with a bit more meaning, our new Urban Adventures In Focus tours may be just the thing. These tours support social enterprises in communities around the globe, and take travellers into work being done by local NGOs, non-profits, and accelerators in struggling communities.
Two of the In Focus experiences that are offered with Intrepid Foundation partner organisations are a Kolkata slum tour, which takes travellers behind the scenes of Pollinate Energy, a social enterprise working to reduce indoor air pollution caused by kerosene lamps and wood stoves in India’s slums; and a Kathmandu cooking class, presented in partnership with Seven Women, a social enterprise that empowers marginalised women in Nepal through literacy classes, skills training, and income generation programs. You can send a friend a gift certificate for any of the In Focus tours, the net proceeds of which are sent right back into the NGO or non-profit.
Whether its donating to a cause that’s close to someone’s heart, or giving them the opportunity to see an organisation’s work in-person, why not bring a little joy to those who need it most this holiday season? Because it really is better to give than receive, right?
