Get under the skin of Mendoza, a city nestled under the Andes and famous the world over for its deep red Malbec wines. Set off on this walking tour of Mendoza from the Plaza Independencia, the city’s huge central plaza. Learn about the local culture and history, discovering all about the indigenous people, the Spanish conquest, the planting of the first vines, the devastating power of earthquakes and the events that have shaped this land and culture.
Explore the tree-lined streets, and learn about how the aqueducts have funnelled icy Andean water into the city, transforming it from an arid dessert into the green oasis it is today. This technique was developed from skills developed by the Inca and without this knowledge the development of Mendoza would have been impossible. Look out for snow-capped Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas, poking it’s head above the city buildings as you continue exploring the streets on the way to the central market. Taste a range of local products and get a lesson in how to shop for and prepare the iconic ‘asado’ barbecue. Delve further into the culture with a visit to a local colonial-style home to try the drink of choice – mate. Learn how to prepare and drink this bitter tea like a local and discover the cultural dos and don’ts of sharing mate.
Take a local bus to the sprawling San Martin Park, which has over 450 hectares of land, vast gardens, a health club, and the city zoo tucked within it’s gilded gates. Soak up the peaceful surrounds with a gentle walk up to the city’s highest viewpoint: Cerro de la Gloria. This is the best place to take in the beauty of this city, from the mountains, to the vineyards. Learn about the local hero, General San Martin, head down the hill and back to the city centre. On way back to Plaza Independencia call into a wine museum to sample some of the city’s legendary reds. Enjoy a glass of malbec, toast the end of the tour and then bid farewell with a stroll back to the plaza.
