9th Aug 2014: Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Every year on the second Saturday in August in Allepey, the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes place on Punnamada Lake. Known to be one of the most famous boat races in the world, and exists to commemorate the visit of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, to Allepey (about 60 kms from Fort Kochi).
The spectacle of the boat race features magnificent snake boats with a hundred (yes, 100!) oarsmen on each boat. Locals cheer loudly for their favourite teams and boats, forcing the lake to completely surrender its typical tranquility in favour of shouting boatsmen and screaming fans.
Also part of your boat race experience will be enjoying local Keralan food during the event, giving you the complete festival experience!
7th September 2014: Onam Festival
Onam is one of the most celebrated festivals for Keralans, so we hope you’ve got your festival hat on! Celebrating the return of the mythical, righteous King Mahabali (who is believed to have brought prosperity to Keralans), the Onam Festival is marked by a day of enjoyment for all. The festival is a celebration of equality, justice, prosperity, and fairness, and we’ll help you celebrate by joining a local and experiencing the festival through their eyes.
Visit a local’s home and participate in the tradition of making flower carpets, then dig in to a delicious home-cooked ‘Onam Sadhya’ traditional lunch with a local family. Without a doubt, celebrating the Onam Festival in Kerala with a local is an experience of a lifetime.
