We depart Cairo and head for the desert, travelling to the region of Fayoum. On our travels, we pay visits to some of this region’s rarely visited pyramids.
Meidum, one of Seneferu’s pyramids, is a remarkable site. A collapsed pyramid, Meidum offers the opportunity for the most adventurous among us to enter the burial chamber inside the pyramid.
Continuing along our route of ancient discovery, we stop in Lahun to see the uniquely designed Pyramid of Lahun, or Senusret II. As one of the first royal tombs built to conceal the location of its entrance, its unusual design was of historical significance to archaeologists.
Next we visit Hawara, a labyrinth and mortuary temple for King Amenemhat III, the last powerful ruler of the 12th Dynasty.
A former Ptolemaic-Roman agricultural city, Karanis is our final destination. Despite being mostly in ruins, Karanis has two well-preserved temples made of mud brick walls. After exploring Karanis, we head back to Cairo, satiated with ancient Egyptian history and experience with some of the region’s most fascinating pyramids.
